Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
