The Nigerian Government Reveals It Furnished Key Information for US-Led Airstrikes as US Official Warns of Additional Attacks
The Nigerian foreign ministry has stated that it provided crucial intelligence in the US airstrikes carried out on December 25, according to the nation's foreign minister this week.
Ex-President Donald Trump previously declared the aerial attacks against ISIS militants in the northwestern region of Nigeria after a period of decrying the organization for targeting Christians.
Detailed Discussions Came Before the Operation
Nigeria's top diplomat, Yusuf Tuggar, stated that he had engaged in "lengthy" discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio immediately before and after the airstrike.
He also noted that Nigeria's leader, Bola Tinubu, had approved for the airstrikes. Tuggar did not rule out further strikes, characterizing them as an "ongoing process" that would also involve other countries.
"The strikes had no connection to a particular religion," Tuggar insisted in an interview with the BBC. "The objective is about targeting militants who have been murdering Nigerian citizens."
American Official Predicts of Further Actions in Nigeria
Shortly following the Christmas Day operation, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth cautioned of additional military actions against ISIS locations in the region.
Hegseth characterized the action as part of efforts to stop the killing of Christians, a stance echoed by the former president. In a social media post, Hegseth stated, "He was explicit... the murder of Christian civilians in Nigeria must cease. More to come..."
Political Reaction to the Military Action
The Christmas Day strikes were hailed by some supporters of the former president, who had been agitating for a strong military reaction to the violence against Christians.
"I can’t think of a better way to observe the holiday than by avenging the death of Christians," posted one prominent activist on social media.
