Norrie Hails 'Biggest Win' Following Fighting Back to Beat Alcaraz in Paris
Cameron Norrie achieved the most notable win of his career by coming back from a lost first set to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.
While he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this triumph marks Norrie's first ever win over a reigning world top-ranked player.
"Huge. Extremely important for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the latest UK male player in history to overcome a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I lost in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to embrace my performance in the closing months of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the greatest win of my career, my initial victory over the world No 1 and likely the most in-form player in the tennis scene right now."
The British player, ranked 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive premier event victories, which marked the best series of performances in the Spanish star's young career.
Game Breakdown
The top seed seemed to be progressing easily towards victory at the start as he cruised past the initial stanza. However, the British contender slowly battled back back into the game by serving with greater precision and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, demanding points. His unceasing steadiness and reliability steadily left its mark.
During large parts of the contest, the world number one delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to find his timing on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked especially uncomfortable executing his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the sport for a large part of this year, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 unforced errors. Across the net, Norrie gave Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his reliability, fitness and depth all match while performing well on serve and picking his spots to advance forward and strike effectively.

In the tense last moments, the British competitor expertly maintained his nerve to close out the best player in the world.
Career Context
After struggling for months due to a serious physical setback and struggles with his form, Norrie slipped as far down as 91st globally this season. Following appearances in the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the Roland Garros round of 16 subsequently, this win further underlines the veteran's improvement as he seeks to come back to the world's top twenty and further. The Spanish sensation, despite his remarkable success, is yet to solve how to display his finest performance in indoor conditions.
