He stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
