From Disappointing to Defective – Does Anyone Want to Secure the Super Bowl This Season?

No major competition markets equal footing like the NFL: it defines their identity. However, after 10 weeks in this campaign, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Instead, it's a scenario where the majority of teams is simply fine.

NFC Clarity

In the NFC, to some degree, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams and Seahawks (both standing at seven wins, two losses) seem like the most balanced franchises in football, and delivered decisive victories in their weekend matchups. Philadelphia at 6-2 despite their struggles still have one of the most talented rosters in the league, comparable to Green Bay (5-2-1). The Lions also (six and three), who have been inconsistent along both lines of scrimmage and navigating internal staff conflicts, have demonstrated they're capable of dominating quality opponents. For all five, it's straightforward to put together a route to the final game.

Muddled AFC Picture

Turning to the American Football Conference, postseason landscape remains completely chaotic. The current division frontrunners after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all at 8-2) and Steelers (5-4 record). Take another look. No Chiefs presence. Buffalo is missing. Not the Ravens or Bengals. The traditional powers, backed by premier quarterback talent, possess either significant personnel gaps or are dealing with health issues.

Parity Mechanics

In some ways, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. However, witnessing this season's top AFC teams in the American Football Conference continues to seem unusual. Aspects of each franchise pass the championship smell test, though not comprehensively. If you were asked to commit to your conference championship predictions right now, would you comfortably choose any among these four teams?

Franchise Analysis

Indianapolis Outlook

Starting in Indianapolis, their quarterback hasn't yet achieved complete disaster level. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He’s back to giving away possessions and faltering under duress. He suffered seven sacks versus Atlanta in the weekend game, and experienced a five-minute stretch in which he threw an interception and fumbled three times. This is a week after he turned the ball over five times versus Pittsburgh.

Indianapolis' offensive unit thrived early in the season since Jones evaded game-changing errors. Taylor along with the blockers make the Colts capable of overcoming periodic mistakes, as they did in Berlin. But Jones returning to his old blunder-prone days would finish postseason aspirations.

Patriots Examination

New England appears fairly alike. Previously, they were a punchline. Currently, they represent the NFL's most pleasant shock and the strongest squad in football after seven straight wins. Except for losing due to fumbles a winnable game versus the Steelers, they’d be sitting a 9-1 record with the best record. Last season, they were old and slow. Today they appear inexperienced, speedy and bold. Still, it’s hard to ignore the weakness of New England's opponents. They've encountered the easiest slate across the NFL, yet vulnerabilities remain. Drake Maye has been brought down on 35 occasions – the second-most in football – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday appeared dangerous. With continued play, those beatings accumulate.

Denver Analysis

Denver stands at 8–2 as well, yet it seems that they're barely surviving. The Denver signal-caller has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing most of the responsibility. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also hovering in the AFC West at 7-2, however, health issues within their blocking corps will make it tough to achieve championship contention.

Pittsburgh Steelers

And then there’s Pittsburgh, surprisingly atop their division even after suffering a decisive loss to Los Angeles on Sunday night. They have a negative point differential, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints given his veteran status persistently appear. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, but Baltimore, with their QB returning to health and facing easier opponents, are on a three-game win streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Ravens have pulled within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift is an indictment of Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. That the Ravens started the season 1-5 and still look like capable of division victory reveals much about the conference as a whole.

Traditional Powers

Baltimore constitutes part among three elite teams – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – driven by elite quarterback play, that would continue to generate the most fear in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo persistently undermine themselves.

Buffalo Bills

A week ago, the Bills were riding high following victory over Kansas City. During Sunday's action they experienced among the season's worst defeats during the campaign. They didn’t just lose versus the Dolphins; they looked terrible, losing 30-13 as visitors. The Dolphins secured their first triumph over the Bills in more than 1,000 days.
