Dramatist Jeremy O Harris Detained in Japan for Alleged Narcotics Trafficking
American actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, best known for the award-contending production Slave Play, was taken into custody in November at an airport in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, officials announced.
Details of the Customs Apprehension
The 36-year-old was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a border inspection agent discovered 0.78 grams of a crystalline substance laced with the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his personal bag, according to a official statement.
He was immediately arrested on suspicion of breaching Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.
Regional customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the public prosecutor to initiate legal action against the individual.
Current Status and Legal Counsel
A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris remains in custody. The official declined to comment on whether Harris has admitted to the allegations.
At this time, it is not known whether the artist has secured legal representation in Japan. Requests for comment to his representatives were not immediately returned.

Authorities stated Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain via a connecting flight in Taiwan. Okinawa is a popular resort destination to the southwest of Tokyo, known for its beaches and military installations.
