Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
